Cambodia today remains one of the poorest countries in Asia, and for that matter, in the world. The political turmoil of the last three decades and resulting disruption of economic and social stability has left many Khmers without a functioning support network or a permanent source of income. As a result, many families exist below the poverty line, with little access to money, food, education and healthcare.
Starfish is working to alleviate these problems. Our projects usually fall into one of three categories: medical, housing and business.
Most of our clients are referred to us by local partner organizations; however, people also come to us for help on the advice of local doctors, previous clients and other concerned members of the community.
Our projects all have a beginning and an end in sight when we undertake them. We do not take on projects that require sustenance, or in other ways discourage client independence. Thus, assistance is given in many ways to ensure that initiated projects are locally viable and sustainable.
